Running a business is challenging enough, but when you're doing it with your spouse, things can get even more complicated. While there are plenty of successful couples in business, there are also unique challenges that can arise.
Here are five common challenges that NZ business owners who work with their spouses face.
Blurring the lines between work and home life.
Not "listening to understand" what your spouse is saying.
Different management styles.
Competing priorities within the workplace.
Not respecting each other's expertise and unique strengths.
To overcome these challenges, these are four suggestions I make when working with couples.
Define clear roles and responsibilities - make sure that you both know what you are supposed to be doing and that there is NO overlap.
Set clear boundaries between work and personal time - no chatting about work at the dinner table! Or when out on date night!
Meet once a week to discuss your action plan for the coming week and any challenges that you need help with. This can be over coffee or lunch but I do suggest a structured agenda works best.
Celebrate your achievements - it is so important to enjoy what you do and have fun doing it.
While it's not always easy, when couples work together, they can create a successful business and a stronger relationship.
By acknowledging and addressing these challenges, NZ business owners who work with their spouses can build a thriving and fulfilling business.
